Two types of systems when counting things in Japanese, the borrowed Chinese method..ichi..ni..san.. and the way that is native to Japan..hitotsu..futatsu..mittsu..

We will call them System A and System B.
System B is the native Japanese system to count items and is used for items which do not have a special counter or a specific shape to them. You can use them for items that do have a specific counter but it will seem unauthentic.
System B
1- hitotsu (一つ)
2- futatsu (二つ)
3- mittsu (三つ)
4- yottsu (四つ)
5- itsutsu (五つ)
6- muttsu (六つ)
7- nanatsu (七つ)
8- yattsu (八つ)
9- kokonotsu (九つ)
10- too (十)
This list seems a lot less shorter than System A right? The downside is, there is no particular pattern aside from the ending of "su/つ" in 1-9.
PRACTICE
  1. 3 cups of coffee (ko-hi/コーヒー)
  2. 2 mobile phones (keitai denwa/けいたいでんわ)
  3. 1 cake (ke-ki/ケーキ)
  4. 10 bags (kaban/かばん)
  5. 4 watches (tokei/とけい)
